Kingsley Hall History

In the Beginning!

London County Council purchased 3,000 acres of wasteland in the Dagenham and Becontree area early in the 1920’s and built what became the largest housing estate in Europe / the World by 1939.

People moved from the slums of the East End of London to what they called “Heaven with the doors open”, new houses, gardens, electricity, gas, and inside toilets. New homes were available, but without any schools, libraries, churches, community centres, or shops.

The London Underground District Line was then extended out and many travelled back to the East End of London for social life and shopping. Returning to Kingsley Hall at Bromley-by-Bow they petitioned Muriel and Doris Lester to start another Kingsley Hall in Dagenham to meet their needs.

The Birth of Kingsley Hall Dagenham

In 1929 a piece of land was purchased by the Lesters' father and a caravan was placed on the site in September 1928 which became “The House of the Community”. The site was then developed to provide a church, nursery, library and a social centre for the new community, meeting the needs through Christian witness. More than 80 years later we continue to serve a local community with very different needs today but still seek to secure “life to the full” by the grace of God.
